HORIM ART MUSEUM: MORE THAN YOUR USUAL MUSEUM

HORIM ART MUSEUM: MORE THAN YOUR USUAL MUSEUM

For art fanatics who wish to explore authentic Korean culture and various forms of arts through time, the Horim Art Museum in Sinsa-dong is the place to be. Opened in June 2009, this spacious edifice holds various performances and exhibitions from time to time. This futuristic structure has exhibition rooms on the second, third and the fourth floor, Museum Shop, and a lounge.

The building, created under the theme of a ceramics and the teeth of comb pattern, is a piece of artwork in itself. Designed by world renowned Korean Architect, Tae Yong Yoo from the Tehje Architecture Office, the Art Center is composed of three main buildings connected to each other creating an ambiance of a small town. The indoor and outdoor facilities and fixtures have a wide and open space that is soothing to the senses and symbolizes the free spirit of the Korean society.

Upon entering the museum, visitors will be greeted by a cave-like passage that leads to the exhibition halls. The mother of pearl decorations on the outer walls symbolizes a shield that when unwrapped reveals a magnificent treasure to behold.

The design also resembles a lotus flowering blooming amidst the hustles and bustles of city life.Jars of various sizes ranging from different dynasties are the highlight of this museum. Most of the artifacts are considered National treasures which represents a milestone in Korean history. Currently, the first Tripitaka Special Exhibition is housed on the second and third floors. It celebrates the 1000 years of its existence (1011 – 2011). The exhibit runs until September 30, 2011.
