MEMORIAL DAY

MEMORIAL DAY

현충일

Last June 06, 2011 (10:00 AM) – Led by President Lee Myung Bak, the whole nation paid their respects at the National Cemetery and the Knight Field in Yongsan where Korean and US army jointly held the annual wreath laying ceremony. It was followed by a prayer for eternal repose and a 21 gun salute.
The said holiday was established through a Presidential decree on April 19, 1956 to commemorate the gallantry of all who died in the Korean War. We honor the dead and remind the living the value of freedom that our forefathers fought against all invaders and colonizers. At present, it is a day of music, a day of ceremony, a day to honor fallen comrades.  We should remember our past to inform our future. Let not the sacrifices of our men and women be in vain and let their life offerings summon us to vigilance and let their memories call us from every walk of life to stand on the sacred ground of liberty and democracy. For some, it is an ordinary holiday when family can go out and have fun but for me it is a ceremony that stands as a MEMORIAL---a day that is forever inscribed in the Korean calendar symbolizing the Koreans love for equality and justice. Indeed, our departed brother were gone but not forgotten.
